Prof Shinya Yamanaka and John Gurdon, Noble Laureate

Prof Shinya Yamanaka, from Kyoto University, Japan, together with John Gurdon from UK, won the Noble Prize in Medicine.  Prof Yamanaka discovered the IPS cell (induced pluripotent stem cells) from adult mouse fibroblast, which closely resemble the embrionic stem cells.
In plant tissue culture, this also resemble to callusing to adult explant instead of meristematic cells.  Merisematic cells in plants as well as animal are easier to culture because it's active cell growth which then differentiate.  Older differentiated cell is difficult to grow or culture, but with Prof Yamanaka discoveries, old and differentiated cell can be turn into something like juvenile cells.  But in order to do that he put 4 kind of new gene that helps the cells to reprogrammed....Isn't cool.  You can reprogrammed cell and one day you can direct the growth to what ever cell you want.

Currently they are doing research on retinal tissue in over coming blindness, this a real breakthrough in the field of medicine and science as a whole.

This also makes me believe that plant will be able to be re programmed...and to come to that, extensive research must come at first.  The possibilities is endless
